The movie centers on an elderly guy who visits a nursing facility and reads a story to an elderly woman. He reads a tale of Allie Hamilton and Noah Calhoun, two young lovers who meet one night at a carnival. Allie’s parents, who disapprove of Noah’s impoverished family, take Allie away from them. Allie meets and becomes engaged to a dashing young soldier named Lon after waiting for Noah to write her for a number of years. Then, Allie visits Noah at his 200-year-old house that he repaired for her, “to see if he’s okay,” because she still has feelings for him. They obviously still feel something for one another, and Allie is forced to choose between her fiancé and her first love.
