Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, detectives with the Louisiana State Police, are summoned back in 2012 to reexamine a 1995 homicide investigation. The two former detectives recount their investigation as the probe moves forward in the present through separate interrogations, reopening old scars and casting doubt on their purportedly solved case of an odd ritualistic murder in 1995.
In 2012, the timelines intertwine and come together, drawing each man back into a world they thought they had left behind. It becomes evident that evil exists on both sides of the law as they learn more about one another and their murderer.
